Working together, we can all make a difference

Foster a Dog

There are a variety of ways that you can become involved with the Northwest German Shepherd Rescue. Our greatest need is always foster homes. If you, or someone you know, is able to foster a dog for one week or more, please let us know about you and your dog experience so that we can attempt to find a suitable foster for your household. The rescue provides food and medical for the dog while it is in foster care; you provide the love and secure environment until a permanent home can be found. Our volunteers do their utmost to evaluate the dogs and match them to the best available foster home to ensure a smooth transition between rescue and the forever  home.

Ideally, the foster families will have experience with the breed.  Other, dog-savvy, individuals are also needed and appreciated!  Shepherds taken into the foster network are evaluated and placed into appropriate foster homes based on their temperament. Foster homes are truly our most valuable asset. If you are interested in learning more about fostering a German shepherd, please email info@northwestgermanshepherd.org.

Foster families get to know the dogs while they are in foster care. As their personality continues to emerge, decisions are made as to the best home for them. Careful consideration is given to making the best choice possible for their future home as this helps ensure a great match and a positive long term outcome.  Our volunteers have many years of combined German shepherd experience and are more than happy to share their knowledge with the adopters to assist in smooth transitions and to help deal with any potential problems that may arise.

Help with Transportation

We also need transportation help on a regular basis. If you have an SUV, station wagon or truck with canopy, we can use your help! We have dogs coming and going from across Western Washington, and occasionally from Eastern to Western Washington (typically with arrival in the Bothell area). If you are willing and able to help with transportation, please let us know! If you are able to help with transporting dogs, we can keep your information on file and contact you when the need arises. We can reimburse for gas expenses as well.

Veterinary services

If you work for a vet clinic that would be willing to help with medical care for the dogs, please let us know! Every dog that is placed through the rescue is given shots, altered and micro-chipped prior to adoption. Sometimes we have dogs that come in needing special care (dental work, x-rays, blood work). Please let us know if you work for a clinic that would be interested in assisting the dogs in rescue, especially if a special needs occasion arises.

Skilled/Special Help

Do you sew? We could use help with creating “Adopt Me” vests for the dogs! The rescue will provide the materials needed. You provide the expert hands to complete the job.

Training

Are you a professional dog trainer who might be willing to help with dogs facing behavior issues? Please let us know! We can always use help in this area and your donated time and expertise will help facilitate the adoption of a difficult dog (through its new and improved behavior!!).  In return, you can expect referrals to your training facility as we do require adopters to sign up for obedience after their adoption is completed.

Grooming

Do you love to bathe dogs, or do you own a grooming salon? Would you be willing to offer free or reduced grooming services to our foster dogs? Let us know!

Sponsor or Donate

Sponsor a dog. If you see a "Sponsor me" logo on one of the dog's bios, this indicates a special ongoing medical need. You can choose to sponsor a dog with a one time donation or regular monthly donations, until the dog is adopted. If you would like sponsor a dog, email info@northwestgermanshepherd.org.
