We are a 501(c)3 Organization
Working together, we can all make a difference

There are a variety of ways that you can become involved with Northwest German Shepherd Rescue. Our greatest need is always loving foster homes. Ideally, foster families will have experience with the German Shepherd breed, but other dog-savvy individuals are also needed and appreciated!

Home Visit Volunteers

Is your pack full, but you'd like to help the rescue?  Do you love dogs, or know how to puppy-proof a home?  We would love to have your help conducting home visits in the Pacific Northwest.  All of our adoption applicants have a home visit completed prior to being approved to bring a dog home.  Worried that you haven't dusted, or have dishes in the sink?  Don't worry about it!   We just want to make sure our dogs go to a safe (and secure) household that has a warm, comfy place for them to sleep.  That's all they really need too - even if you really have been meaning to repaint the dining room.

Foster a Dog

Can you dogsit for a couple of weeks?

That's a lot what fostering is like -- with the added bonus of being involved in the adoption process.  The rescue provides ALL food and medical care for our German Shepherd while you foster it in your home; you provide the love and secure environment until a permanent home is found. If you, or someone you know, is able to foster a dog for one week or more, please let us know about you and your dog experience so that we can attempt to find a suitable foster dog for your home. Our volunteers do their utmost to evaluate the dogs and match them to the best available foster home to ensure a smooth transition between our rescue and their forever home.

Do you enjoy learning about dogs and dog behavior?

Foster families get to know the dogs while they are in foster care. As their personalities continue to emerge after the trauma of coming into rescue, the observations of foster families are important as decisions are made about the best future home for each dog. Our volunteers have many years of combined German Shepherd experience and are more than happy to share their knowledge with foster families and with adopters to assist in smooth transitions and to help deal with any potential problems that may arise.

If you are interested in learning more about fostering a German Shepherd, please email info@northwestgermanshepherd.org. Or better yet, please fill out a Foster Application today and get started on the fun and fulfilling road of a German Shepherd foster family!  When completing the application, please make sure to take a moment and review the Foster Requirements here, for more details and some legal information about your commitment.

Help with Transportation

We also need transportation help on a regular basis. If you have an SUV, station wagon or truck with canopy, we can use your help! We have dogs coming and going from across the Pacific Northwest (including Oregon, Idaho, Washington) and occasionally from Eastern to Western Washington (typically with arrival in the Bothell area). If you are willing and able to help with transportation, please let us know and complete the Volunteer Application here! We can keep your information on file and contact you when the need arises.

Veterinary services

If you work for a vet clinic that would be willing to help with medical care for the dogs, please let us know! Every dog that is placed through the rescue is given shots, altered and micro-chipped prior to adoption. Sometimes we have dogs that come in needing special care (dental work, x-rays, blood work). Please let us know if you work for a clinic that would be interested in assisting the dogs in rescue, especially if a special-needs situation arises.

Skilled/Special Help

Do you sew? We could use help with creating “Adopt Me” vests for the dogs! The rescue will provide the materials needed. You provide the expert hands to complete the job.

Do you have a background in HR, Recruiting, Customer Service, or Telesales?  We always need help with processing applications.  If you're willing to spend an hour on the phone each week, we'd love your help checking veterinary references, personal references, or even talking to applicants if you're interested!  All you need is the ability to make long-distance phone calls or Skype, and the desire to listen to applicants tell their dog stories while you match them with their perfect Forever Friend!

Are you a professional dog trainer who might be willing to help with dogs facing behavior issues? Please let us know! We can always use help in this area and your donated time and expertise will help facilitate the adoption of a difficult dog (through its new and improved behavior!!).  In return, you can expect referrals to your training facility as we do require adopters to sign up for obedience after their adoption is completed.

Do you love to bathe dogs, or do you own a grooming salon? Would you be willing to offer free or reduced grooming services to our foster dogs? Let us know!

Sponsor or Donate

Sponsor a dog. If you see a "Sponsor me" logo on one of the dog's bios, this indicates a special ongoing medical need. You can choose to sponsor a dog with a one-time donation or regular monthly donations, until the dog is adopted. If you would like sponsor a dog, email info@northwestgermanshepherd.org.
